Timber Forge

Fire Doesn't Finish Wood. It Transforms It.

Hand-burned · Hand-brushed · One of a Kind

Timber Forge

Premium Cedar & Fir, Forged In Fire.

Timber Forge is Glacier Millworks’ modern interpretation of the traditional Japanese technique of shou sugi ban.

Rather than applying a surface treatment, we transform the wood itself.

Each board is hand-burned and hand-brushed, then finished with a multi-tone stain process that creates depth, variation and character. No two pieces are identical.

Crafted from premium Cedar and Fir, TimberForge is built for projects where material integrity matters as much as appearance.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is shou sugi ban?

Shou sugi ban is a centuries-old Japanese technique of charring wood to preserve and protect it. Because each board is hand-burned and hand-brushed, no two pieces are identical.

What species are available?

For exterior applications, Timber Forge is available in Cedar and Fir.  For interior applications, Cedar, fir, Pine, Hemlock and Spruce are also available. Cedar is commonly specified for exterior cladding due to its natural resistance to moisture and insects.

How does Timber Forge finish hold up over time?

The burning process naturally enhances resistance to moisture, UV exposure and pests. Each board is finished with PPG ProLuxe for superior durability and backed by a 15-year warranty, with a Care & Maintenance Guide provided to support long-term performance.

Is Timber Forge fire-resistant?

When the wood is burned, it creates a natural char layer that offers some surface-level fire resistance. However, with the Timber Forge line the majority of the char layer is brushed off, so an optional fire treatment is available for projects that require a higher level of code compliance. Talk to our team early in the process, and we'll help you spec it correctly.
