The right wood for the right project

Every species performs differently. Cedar offers natural durability. Fir brings structural strength. Pine delivers rich stain acceptance. Thermally modified woods provide exceptional stability and long-term performance. Choosing the right species shapes how a finish looks, functions and ages over time.

We work with the highest grade lumber available, sourced responsibly and finished in-house. The species you select carries the same weight as the finish we apply.

THE FOUNDATION OF EVERY FINISH

Before we apply a finish, we start with the wood itself. The species you choose influences how the material responds to burning, brushing, staining, thermal modification and other production processes — and how it holds up over time.

Every board that enters our facility is carefully selected for quality. We evaluate grain structure, moisture content and overall character to ensure the wood is suited for its intended application and finishing process. This attention to detail is the foundation of enduring craftsmanship.

Core wood species

Cedar

The standard for stability

Cedar has long been trusted for its natural durability and resistance to moisture, decay and insects. Its refined grain structure takes finishes consistently, while the material itself weathers with depth and character over time.

RESPONSIBLY SOURCED,
HONESTLY FINISHED

We source cedar and fir from responsibly managed forests, while our thermally modified species come from well-managed European and New Zealand plantations.

Every piece of wood that enters our shop arrives with intention because the way we finish our timber matters just as much as where it was grown.

By relying on heat and hand craftsmanship rather than harsh chemical treatments, our process yields wood that performs for decades while carrying less environmental weight.

Ultimately, longevity is the sustainability that counts. When a board lasts for generations, it never needs replacing — that is where our difference lies.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I use pine for exterior applications?

A: Standard pine isn't recommended for exterior siding use due to lower decay resistance. However, pine is commonly used in soffit applications. Thermally modified wood products such as Nordic spruce in our Terra Therm line and thermally modified Radiata pine products like Imbue and Abodo Vulcan perform exceptionally well in exterior applications.

Q: What's the difference between cedar and thermally modified wood?

A: Cedar offers natural decay resistance and stability. Thermally modified wood achieves enhanced durability, dimensional stability and moisture resistance through a controlled heat-treatment process. Glacier Millworks offers thermally modified Nordic spruce (Terra Therm) and Radiata pine (Abodo Vulcan and Imbue), allowing you to select the right material based on your project's performance and aesthetic requirements.

Q: Does the wood species affect the final color of the finish?

A: Absolutely. Pine absorbs stain more deeply, creating richer tones. Cedar and fir produce a more subtle, refined color. The grain structure and density of each species interact differently with our stains and finishes.

Q: Which wood is best for a burned finish?

A: Both cedar and fir work beautifully with our Timber Forge process. Cedar creates softer, more organic char patterns. Fir delivers sharper grain definition and a slightly more dramatic contrast.

Q: How do I know if I need thermally modified wood?

A: If your project is in a high-moisture environment, experiences extreme temperature swings or demands maximum dimensional stability with minimal maintenance, thermally modified wood is worth the investment.
