THERMALLY MODIFIED

Naturally Enhanced, Built to Perform

Thermally modified wood begins as responsibly grown plantation timber and emerges from the kiln as something much more: dimensionally stable, resistant to decay and colored a rich, even brown that runs through the full thickness of every board. Heat, steam and fresh air do all the work.

At Glacier Millworks, we offer Terra Therm, Abodo Vulcan and Imbue — three of the industry's most trusted thermally modified wood products. We pair these world-class materials with our own precision milling and artisan finishing in the Flathead Valley, where every board is carefully evaluated before it ships

Why Thermally Modified

  • Stability You Can Measure. Thermal modification permanently restructures the wood's cells, dramatically reducing swelling and shrinkage for clean lines that hold across seasons.
  • Durability From Within. The process removes the moisture and natural sugars that invite decay, giving the wood lasting biological resistance to its core.
  • Color That Runs Deep. The kiln imparts a deep, uniform tone across the entire cross-section, so profiles, edges and details carry the same rich hue.
  • Pure and Chemical-free. Heat, steam and air are the only inputs, producing a clean material that's safe for all spaces.

Three Product Lines. One Standard of Excellence.

Terra Therm: Heat-Forged, Chemical-Free

Terra Therm is crafted by sourcing the highest grade of Nordic Spruce in Finland then modifying it through a chemical-free process of high-heat drying, thermal modification and moisture conditioning. The modification increases the wood's durability class, delivering a dimensionally stable, low-maintenance material that performs at the highest levels, even in extreme environments. Available in Nordic Spruce and offered in brushed, smoothed, bandsawn and circlesawn textures, Terra Therm is backed by a 15-year limited warranty against rot and decay.

Ideal Applications: Exterior cladding and decking, interior finishes, challenging climates, Interior paneling

Appearance:  Tight Knot, very similar grain and knot structure to Western Red Cedar

Crafted for Demanding Environments

Where It Excels

Thermally modified wood performs where ordinary materials are pushed to their limits. From exterior cladding and facades in high-exposure environments to projects in fire-sensitive regions, Terra Therm, Abodo Vulcan and Imbue provide architects and builders with proven, high-performance solutions backed by trusted certifications and real-world performance.

Proven Before It's Promised

Every Terra Therm, Abodo Vulcan and Imbue product is backed by years of laboratory testing and proven field performance. Each board is then evaluated in-house for milling quality, color consistency and texture before it ships.

Two Paths, Both Earned

Left to the elements, thermally modified wood develops a silvered patina that adds depth and quiet sophistication over time. Prefer the original tone? A UV-protective finish holds that rich brown color in place for designs built around it.

Responsibly Sourced

Both Abodo Vulcan and Imbue are milled from FSC®-certified plantation forests, growing renewable timber that takes pressure off old-growth and tropical species. Terra Therm follows the same conservation-minded approach with its fully chemical-free ThermoWood® process.

That sourcing, matched with our low-waste production here in the Flathead Valley, makes these product lines a responsible choice for architects and builders seeking sustainably sourced architectural wood.

The Proof Is in the Board

Photos and specs only tell part of the story — in person, thermally modified wood looks and feels just like the real, solid timber it is.
