TIMBERS

EXPOSED BEAMS, POSTS AND TIMBERS

Exposed beams, posts and timbers can serve both structural and decorative roles while becoming a defining architectural element within a space. At Glacier Millworks, timbers are primarily crafted from Douglas Fir, selected for its strength, stability and distinctive grain, then milled and finished in Montana to meet the project’s specifications and design intent.

Built for the Application

From structural beams and posts to decorative details, every project starts with its specific application. Wood species, grade, dimensions and finish are carefully selected to ensure the timber delivers both its required performance and the warm character expected from exposed wood.

Structural or Decorative

Glacier Millworks’ timbers can be used in both structural/load-bearing and decorative applications. Structural timbers are precisely graded and sized to meet exact engineering specifications. Decorative elements deliver that same craftsmanship and finish flexibility without the load-bearing requirements.

Douglas Fir for Heavy Timber

Douglas Fir is Glacier Millworks’ primary species for timber applications, offering the strength, stability and grain character well suited for exposed beams, posts and other large-format wood elements.

Milled and Finished to Spec

Every timber is cut to the specified dimensions and hand-finished in our Montana shop, then inspected before it ships. We work from project specifications to accommodate the dimensions and details required for the application.

Planning for Natural Movement and Maintenance

Heavy timber naturally checks and shifts as it dries and acclimates, which should be factored into the design details. Finish selection and long-term maintenance needs will also vary depending on whether the timber is used inside or exposed to the elements.

Finishes for Heavy Timber

Glacier Millworks offers several finishing options for Douglas Fir timbers to achieve different levels of texture, color and character while meeting the species and dimensional requirements of the application.

Timber Forge

Timber Forge is charred and hand-brushed, a process that accentuates the natural grain to create a dramatic, tactile texture. On an exposed beam or post, it reads as the boldest element in the room rather than a background structural piece.

Alpine

Alpine is hand-finished in our shop, giving each beam warm color and natural grain variation rather than a flat, uniform look. It's a straightforward choice for timber meant to ground a room without competing with other elements.

Revenant

Revenant is layered by hand into a deep, weathered tone that reads as naturally weathered wood. On a beam or post, it gives the structure an established, settled quality from the day it's installed.

See It Before You Build It

The best way to choose timber is to experience it in person. Feel the grain, check the finish in natural light and picture it in the frame. Request a sample before you finalize the spec.

Frequently asked questions

Can Glacier Millworks’ timbers be structural or decorative?

Both. Glacier Millworks provides timbers for structural/load-bearing and decorative applications. For structural applications, species, grade and dimensions should be established according to the project's structural requirements

Can timbers be used indoors and out?

Yes, depending on the species, finish and project requirements. Our team can help determine the appropriate timber and finish based on the intended application and exposure.

What sizes are available?

Available dimensions vary by species and product. Douglas Fir is the primary species used for Glacier Millworks’ timber applications, while options such as Abodo Vulcan have size limitations. Contact our team with your project specifications to confirm availability.

What species is most commonly used for Glacier Millworks’ timbers?

Douglas Fir is the primary species we use for timber applications and can be finished in Timber Forge, Alpine or Revenant styles. Abodo Vulcan may also be available for select timber applications, subject to size limitations.

Do you ship beyond Montana?

Yes. Every timber is selected, milled and hand-finished by our team in Montana, then inspected to the same rigorous standard before shipping anywhere in the country.
