Project Overview

Nestled along the Clark Fork River in Missoula’s Maclay Flats, the Walker Residence was designed as a deeply personal family home. The project carried unique significance: the architect was designing the home for his own parents on a site just down the road from where he grew up.

The vision was to create a modern Montana home that felt warm, inviting and connected to its surroundings, using clean architectural lines, natural materials and carefully curated details. The result is a home that feels sophisticated without losing its sense of comfort.

Scariano Construction was the natural choice to bring that vision to life. For nearly three decades, the Missoula-based contracting company has earned a reputation across Western Montana for architect-driven custom homes, renovations and historic restorations, recognized by Historic Preservation Awards and national publications. On a project this personal, that caliber mattered.

Throughout the residence, white oak serves as a defining material. To complement those warm wood tones and create visual continuity across the interior, Scariano Construction selected a Glacier Millworks tongue-and-groove ceiling system as one of the home’s signature architectural features.

Challenge

The design called for a vaulted ceiling that would become a focal point of the home’s primary living space. The material needed to deliver depth and character while maintaining the refined, minimalist aesthetic established throughout the project.

Because the ceiling would be highly visible from almost every angle in the room, consistency in color, grain and finish was critical. Every board would be viewed up close and in changing natural light throughout the day.

The product also needed to complement the extensive white oak architectural detailing throughout the home, including custom window stools and trim, while supporting the warm, inviting atmosphere envisioned by both the architect and the homeowners.

Solution

Glacier Millworks worked closely with Scariano Construction to provide a tongue-and-groove ceiling system that aligned with the project’s design goals and overall material palette.

The interior ceiling uses 1×6-inch Revenant fir boards, installed tight (no gaps) and finished in a custom color achieved through a proprietary brushing and staining process that results in a one-of-a-kind finish.

The selected stain introduced the richness needed to soften the home’s contemporary architecture while maintaining the clean, understated aesthetic that defined the residence.

As with many projects involving natural wood products, adjustments were required throughout the installation process.

Scariano’s collaborative approach to construction management and Glacier Millworks’ responsiveness throughout the job allowed the teams to address concerns, find solutions and keep the project moving without compromising design intent.

Results

Today, the vaulted tongue-and-groove ceiling serves as one of the home’s most striking architectural features. The natural wood tones pull directly from the surrounding white oak, carrying a quiet continuity throughout the interior.

Morning and evening light moves across the ceiling throughout the day, highlighting the wood’s natural character and bringing a rich softness to the expansive living space. The material helps balance the home’s modern design while creating an atmosphere that feels welcoming and lived-in.

The Scariano team summed it up best:

“We wanted something that captured that golden-hour feel. It creates this beautiful warmth in the space that really wraps you up. It’s like a hug in that room.”

Why Glacier Millworks

For Scariano Construction, choosing Glacier Millworks went beyond a simple transaction.

As a builder specializing in architect-driven custom homes and historic restorations, Scariano holds its trade partners to the same standard it applies to its own work: accessible, responsive and committed to finding solutions when challenges arise.

Glacier Millworks’ willingness to meet in person, maintain open communication and collaborate throughout the project helped establish trust early and reinforced the relationship through construction.

That local presence has become an asset in itself. Scariano appreciates working with a team that knows exactly where the wood is sourced and can bring clients directly to Glacier Millworks’ showroom at any point in the process.

As Thayne from Scariano Construction put it:

“It’s nice to have that rapport where we’ve already shaken these guys’ hands, and when we’re calling them, we know each other by name and face.”

“Overall, everybody loves it. It's the right color, tone and contrast to what we were trying to achieve in that space.”
